The Val Pomaro and Mottolone

A journey through nature and breathtaking views

This itinerary winds through rolling hills and ancient paths, providing extraordinary views of the Euganean Hills. The route, suitable for all seasons, begins in the heart of the village of Arquà Petrarca and develops along the bright Val Pomaro, until it reaches the panoramic summit of the Mottolone.

The route alternates between paved and short dirt sections and runs between cultivations of olive trees, vineyards and mixed forests, offering a perfect combination of nature and culture.

The route in detail

Departure from Arquà Petrarca

The walk starts from Piazzetta San Marco, crossing the arch of the Loggia dei Vicari and passing the column with the lion of the Serenissima. After a few steps, you skirt the bar Ventolone, behind which is a large parking lot.

Continuing on, on the left you take the stradina that leads into the Pomaro Valley, immersing yourself immediately into a landscape rich in Mediterranean vegetation: pomegranates, rosemary, almond, olive and lilac trees. In spring, the pink clumps of Judas trees further enrich the panorama.

Panoramic rise among vineyards and ancient geological formations

Climbing gently, one encounters outcrops of red flake, a sedimentary rock typical of the area, and ancient trachyte walls. The Val Pomaro opens up before hikers, closed by the coast of the Monte delle Oche, characterized by dense conifer reforestation.

Along the way one can see the volcanic cones of Calaone, the soft dome of Covolo and the undulating profile of Monte Cecilia di Baone, creating one of the most fascinating Euganean views.

Arrive at Mottolone and return to Arquà

After passing the Restaurant Val Pomaro, ideal for a break, continue until you reach the highest point of the route: the Mottolone (284 m). This natural terrace provides an unparalleled view of the surrounding landscape, with the profile of the Euganean Hills looming on the horizon.

The return trip takes place along the coast of Monte Ventolone, with the possibility of shortening the itinerary through the Sentiero Atestino. The last section leads back into the historic center of Arquà Petrarca, passing by the Poet's Path, which leads back to the Piazzetta San Marco.
